Some places are worth the short drive, and the LaHave Bakery is one of them. Ten or so minutes down the LaHave River from Bridgewater, in a wonderfully creaky old general store right on the water, it’s the kind of spot locals send you to before you’ve even asked.
The draw is honest, made-from-scratch baking — thick-cut cinnamon buns, crusty loaves, hearty sandwiches and soups, and coffee to take out onto the wharf. Everything’s unpretentious and generous, and the riverside setting does half the work: you can watch the water while you eat, and there’s a real sense of the South Shore’s slower pace here.
Make a morning of it. Time your visit to coincide with a crossing on the nearby LaHave River cable ferry — one of the last of its kind in the province — and you’ve got a proper little local outing for the cost of breakfast. It’s busiest and at its best in the warmer months, though the bakery’s warmth is welcome year-round. Grab an extra bun for later; back at your suite, with its own kitchen and coffee, it makes a fine second breakfast.
