Packing for an Extended Stay: What to Bring for a Week, a Month, or Longer

Open suitcase packed for an extended stay

Packing for a weekend is easy. Packing for a week, a month, or an open-ended relocation stay is a different exercise entirely — and it’s a question we get from a lot of guests booking extended stays with us in Bridgewater.

The good news is that because every suite at Empire Riverside Stay comes fully furnished with a private kitchen, dedicated workspace, and comfortable living areas, you’re packing for yourself, not for the basics. Skip the travel kettle and the compact laundry bag — you won’t need them.

For clothing, think in terms of a capsule wardrobe rather than a full closet: a handful of versatile layers you can mix and repeat, since Nova Scotia’s weather can shift quickly regardless of season. A good waterproof layer earns its space in the suitcase year-round, and sturdy walking shoes are worth prioritising if you plan on exploring the LaHave River trails or day-tripping to Lunenburg.

If you’re here for medical travel, keep essential documents, medications, and contact information for South Shore Regional Hospital easily accessible rather than buried in checked luggage. For remote workers, a laptop stand or second monitor (if you use one at home) is worth the suitcase space — our desks are ready for you, but bringing your own setup preferences makes the workday smoother.

Don’t over-pack toiletries or kitchen basics — with a full kitchen on hand, a quick stop at a local grocery store on Main Street covers the rest, and it’s often cheaper than bringing it from home anyway.

Finally, bring whatever makes a temporary space feel like yours — a favourite mug, a book, a framed photo. Small things go a long way over a longer stay.
